Decompression Might Be Just What You Need

To Eliminate Pain In Your Back, Legs Or Feet

What is Decompression?

Sometimes through injury and sometimes through age, the discs between the vertebrae of your back start to bulge out.  The bulge can get big enough to place pressure on the spinal cord or nerves.  The pressure creates symptoms of pain or numbness in your back legs or feet.  Until recently, surgery was thought to be your only option.

Decompression is a technology that allows us to gently create negative pressure on the disc and has been found to decrease the size of the bulge.  The goal of decompression is to remove the pressure off the spinal cord and/or the spinal nerves completely .   This can relieve the symptoms that people suffer due to the bulging disc.

Decompression is a technology that helps to alleviate or remove pain caused by a bulging disc in your back.

Do I Need Decompression?

Decompression is especially helpful for people who suffer from a bulging spinal disc.  The symptoms that most people feel if they suffer from a bulging disc are:

1)  pain that radiates from the low back into the gluteal region (butt cheek)

2) Pain that goes down the back of the leg often known as sciatica.

3) Pain or numbness in the foot or the bottom of the foot.

4) Pain aggravated while sitting or standing or driving is common.

The pain of a disc bulge is often described as a burning pain or a numbness feeling.  However, the pain can also sometimes be described as a sharp pain depending on how severe the problem is.

People who suffer from this type of problem often try physical therapists.  They tend to get very little benefit over the long term.   Pain medications or even cortisone shots are also very common.  The patient may receive some temporary relief.  However, most likely the pain will continue to return once the medication has worn off.

Many people don’t realize that the pain or numbness they are feeling is not the result of a problem in the area where the pain is felt.  The sensation of pain  is a result of bad signals being sent to the brain because the disc bulge is putting pressure on the nerves.

The pressure must be removed from the nerve for the symptoms to change.

Is Surgery An Option?

Surgery is often considered an option with bulging discs.   Depending on how far the problem has progressed it may be the only option.  When you first consult about surgery, you find out that the success rate is about 50%.  If you are in a lot of pain, those results may seem comforting.  However, you should know that success rate is calculated based on how people feel one year after surgery.

If you make it through the first year that surgery will always be considered successful even if the pain comes back just as bad the week after the 1 year anniversary of the surgery.

A better number to consider came from a study a few years ago which found that 75% of people who have back surgery, needed second one within 4 years.   Most experts say you should exhaust all of your options before attempting surgery.     It is also a good idea to explore all your options as soon as possible so you don’t get to the point that surgery is your only option.

What if I have tried decompression or something similar with no results?

The term decompression is being used to describe many types of care today.  However, not all therapies with that description accomplish the same goals.  We have made the investment to get the best equipment available for the greatest opportunity for success.

This starts as you walk through the door for the first time.  We don’t accept everyone who wants to be treated.  We have a computerized analysis system which gives us great insight to which who will respond to the services we offer.  It is based on this testing that we determine if you will be considered a candidate for our services.  With this technology, we can pinpoint where the actual problem is which gives us a great advantage.  Just because the pain is in the back doesn’t mean the problem is there.  Often people who failed to get relief at another office likely have a problem somewhere besides the back.  When we focus on the origination of the problem we are able to achieve the results we want.

A significant effort has been made over the last 10 years to accumulate special tools and treatments that allow us to treat people from slight pain to very severe.  Therefore, our office is often able to have success on patients that other offices have not.  our success rate is 92.3%.
