Nobody wants to lose their hearing. But simply not wanting to lose your hearing doesn’t stop it from happening. Hearing lose is unfortunately extremely common. Roughly 30% of people over the age of 60 have some degree of hearing loss. Is their hearing going to get better as they get older? No. Just like everything else, it is only going to get worse with age. And here’s the thing. Although there is nothing that you can do to regain your age-related hearing loss, there are ways to prevent it.

Researchers recently analyzed hearing in 2,592 men and women between the ages of 20-69 years. Then they looked to see if there was any correlation between hearing loss and how much vitamin C, beta-carotene, and magnesium they had in their diets. They found that the people with the highest intake of both magnesium and vitamin C had up to 20% better hearing than those with the lowest intake. Similarly, the men and women with the highest intake of both magnesium and beta-carotene had 16.57% better hearing. So what’s so special about these nutrients?

Maybe nothing. Maybe people with a higher intake of the nutrients just have better diets all around. Or maybe they are just more health conscious. But leaving those possibilities aside, there are recent studies in animals that have shown that there is something special when you combine magnesium with antioxidants such as vitamin C and beta-carotene. The protection that is seen with the antioxidants by themselves is amplified when you combine them with magnesium.

So as you get older, especially if you already have some degree of hearing loss, it only makes sense to make sure that you are in the high intake group.
