Shoulder pain is common in baseball especially at the beginning of the season. For instance, a player might go to practice and try to throw just as hard as they did at the end of the last season. Obviously, this could cause irritation of the muscles. The most common cause of shoulder pain is an inflammation of the tendons of the bicep muscle due to improper or overuse. The bicep: is the main muscle used in the baseball throw. This muscle has two tendons that attach the muscle to the shoulder bones which cause the arm to move when the muscle contracts. If this muscle is overused, baseball players will feel pan in the front of their shoulder. The pain could be mild to severe and is often caused by inflammation and swelling of these tendons.
The cause of the problem could be:
- throwing mechanics,
- improper warmup or conditioning,
- overuse
- physical weakness or
- instability
Treatment
Treatment can start immediately after the pain is felt. Firstly, if the pain is low to mild intensity, you can do some basic stretches and some light strengthening. Sometimes this course of action will relieve the pain immediately or it may take a few days. It is a good idea to take a few days off from throwing. After a few days it is important to begin some short range, low intensity throwing of the baseball. You want to make sure the motion is not causing pain so go slow at first. throwing will speed up the recovery process and increase the range of motion of the shoulder. If the pain persists you should consult a professional.
It is key to remember that there is a lot of internal healing activity taking place during the healing process. Thousands, if not, millions of chemical reactions all have to take place for repair of a tendon. This work is coordinated by the brain and it uses the nerves to direct the activities. If the nerves are not functioning at their peak, the healing process could be delayed or incomplete. Chiropractors are specialists in making sure the nerves are functioning at their peak. so the healing can be done as fast as possible. If you are not sure if your nerves are working at their best, lets get you in for a computerized scan of the nervous system.
