It’s mid-June, and summer vacation season is in full swing. Whether you’re road-tripping across Nebraska, flying to the beach, or heading to the lake for a long weekend, this is the time of year to relax, recharge—and make memories.
But nothing puts a damper on a vacation faster than back pain flaring up while you’re supposed to be having fun.
At We Care Wellness Center in Omaha, I’ve seen it happen far too often: someone feels fine until they hit the road or airport, and suddenly they’re stiff, sore, or in full-on pain for the rest of their trip.
The good news? A little planning can go a long way. And if you’re already hurting, there’s help for that too.
Why Travel Triggers Back Pain
Whether you’re traveling by car or plane, there are a few common reasons back pain shows up on vacation:
-
Sitting for long stretches in cramped positions puts pressure on your spine and discs
-
Lifting heavy luggage (usually with bad form) strains the back muscles
-
Unfamiliar beds or hotel pillows don’t support your spine like they should
-
Disrupted routines often mean less stretching, more stress, and poor posture
If your back is already tight or misaligned, travel can push it past its limit.
5 Tips to Prevent Back Pain While Traveling
1. Pack Light—Or Pack Smart
Use a suitcase with wheels, and avoid carrying heavy bags on one side of your body. When lifting luggage, bend at the knees—not your waist.
2. Support Your Spine in Transit
Whether you’re in a car or plane, use a small pillow or rolled-up sweatshirt behind your lower back. It helps maintain healthy spinal curves and prevents slouching.
3. Move Every Hour
Set a reminder to stand up, stretch, or walk around every 60 minutes. Motion keeps blood flowing and reduces stiffness.
4. Stretch After You Arrive
Take five minutes to stretch your hamstrings, hip flexors, and lower back. This simple step can undo hours of tension from travel.
5. Stick to Your Routine (As Best You Can)
Even on vacation, try to stay hydrated, sleep well, and move a little each day. Your spine thrives on consistency.
Already in Pain? Don’t Wait Until You’re Home
If your back starts acting up while you’re away, don’t ignore it. Pain is your body’s way of saying something needs attention. A small issue today can become a big problem tomorrow.
And if you’re already home and your pain hasn’t gone away—or has gotten worse since traveling—it’s time to get it checked.
