I don’t have to tell you what a great job the milk industry has done convincing people how great and important milk is for a healthy body. The US government suggests that people should drink 3 glasses per day to be healthy. Anyone of you that know me know that I tell everyone to exchange there glass of milk for water.

So, who is right?

Finally there was an impressive study done on this subject.

It tracked more than 100,000 men and women in Sweden for up to 13 Years! This is a huge study and because of the size of it, making the results more substantial.
The scientists were trying to find a link between milk consumption and reduced risk of bone fracture in men and women.  The study included 38,984 women and 45,339 men whom they started tracking in 1997.  They followed them for 10 years or until their death.

Results:

Women who drank at least 3 glasses of milk a day were 16 % more likely to have a fracture and 60% more likely to have a hip fracture than those women who drank an average of less than 1 glass per day.
Women who drank 3 or more glasses of milk a day were also; 93% more likely to die during the course of the study,   90% more likely to die of cardiovascular disease and  44% more likely to die of cancer as compared with Women who drank an average of less than 1 glass per day.
The effects in men were smaller:  10% more likely to die and 16% more likely to have cardiovascular disease.
Why is all this happening?  This is the hypothesis:  in order for your body to break down lactose (the sugar in milk) you body has to produce D-galactose. Studies have shown that chronic exposure to this nutrient causes “oxidative stress damage, chronic inflammation, neuro-degeneration, decreased immune response, and gene transcriptional changes”
We are the only animal to consume milk after weening, we simply don’t need it. Substitute the milk for water, you can add some life to your water with fresh fruits or a splash of lemonade!
